Moroccans Abroad: The Diaspora

Some 5 million Moroccans live outside Morocco — over 10% of the population — one of Africa’s largest diasporas, whose remittances are a lifeline of the national economy.

Waves of migration

Mass migration began in the 1960s and 1970s: workers to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands (labor agreements), then to Spain and Italy in the 1980s–90s, then new waves to North America (the US DV lottery and tech talent) — over 200,000 Moroccans in the United States and Canada.

Remittances: 100 billion dirhams

Diaspora remittances exceed 100 billion dirhams a year (about US $10 billion) — among the largest sources of foreign currency, sometimes surpassing tourism and phosphate revenues. The Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Residing Abroad (1990 CE) and the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (2007 CE) were created to serve them.

Stars from the diaspora

The diaspora produced world stars: in sports (Achraf Hakimi — Paris Saint-Germain — and the national team’s stars), in art and music (RedOne the global producer, French Montana), in science and business — ambassadors of Morocco in every field.

World Cup 2022: the Qatar miracle

In December 2022 CE the Moroccan national team achieved a historic feat: the first African and Arab team to reach a World Cup semi-final (Qatar 2022) — beating Belgium, Spain, and Portugal — igniting the joy of a billion fans worldwide. Today Morocco is preparing to host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

And while Moroccans carry their flag across the world, their homeland faces domestic challenges: water, jobs, territorial justice — the story of Morocco today and tomorrow, in the final chapter.
