History of Morocco Ch.28: Moroccan Culture: From Tamazight to World Cuisine

«History of Morocco» series — Chapter 28 of 30

Moroccan Culture: From Tamazight to World Cuisine

Morocco is a cultural mosaic: Amazigh, Arab, Andalusi, African, Jewish — civilizational layers accumulated over three millennia, producing a unique identity.

Tamazight: from marginalization to the constitution

After decades of marginalization, the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) was created in 2001 CE, the Tifinagh script was adopted for writing, and Tamazight became an official language in the 2011 constitution — a historic cultural victory. Today Tamazight is taught in schools and broadcast on TV channels.

Moroccan cuisine: second in the world

Moroccan cuisine has been ranked the world’s second-best cuisine (several international rankings): couscous (UNESCO-listed in 2020 CE as shared Maghrebi heritage), tagine, bastilla, harira — dishes that conquered the world’s tables.

Cinema and festivals

Morocco became a cinema capital: the Marrakech Film Festival (since 2001 CE) hosts world stars, and Hollywood epics were filmed in Ouarzazate (Gladiator, Game of Thrones). Mawazine in Rabat is among the world’s largest music festivals (millions of attendees).

World heritage: 9 UNESCO sites

Morocco holds 9 UNESCO World Heritage sites: the old medinas of Fez and Marrakech, Aït Benhaddou, Essaouira, Roman Volubilis, Tetouan, Mazagan (El Jadida), Rabat — an open-air museum.

And this culture did not stay within the borders: millions of Moroccans carried it to every continent — the story of the Moroccan diaspora, in the next chapter.
