«History of Morocco» series — Chapter 30 of 30
Morocco Today & Tomorrow: Challenges & Horizons
After three thousand years of history, Morocco stands today as a rising regional power: Africa’s largest port, its first high-speed train, its top car manufacturer, a team that reached a World Cup semi-final. But the challenges are real — and this chapter faces them honestly.
The water challenge: drought crisis
Morocco suffers acute water stress: consecutive drought years (2020–2025 CE) cut dam reserves to critical levels. The answer: giant seawater desalination plants (Casablanca — Africa’s largest), drip-irrigation programs, and “Green Generation” agriculture.
The jobs challenge: youth first
Youth unemployment (university graduates especially) remains the top social challenge — despite the millions of jobs promised by industrial strategies (automotive, aerospace, renewables, digital). The fix lies in vocational training and linking universities to the labor market.
Territorial justice: a two-speed Morocco?
The gap between the Atlantic axis (Tangier–Casablanca–Rabat) and the other regions — a challenge addressed by advanced regionalization (2011 constitution) and development programs for the Rif, Souss, and Sahara (Dakhla Atlantic port).
Horizons: 2030 and beyond
The horizon is promising: the 2030 World Cup (co-hosted), the Morocco–Nigeria gas pipeline (the world’s longest offshore pipeline), green hydrogen, artificial intelligence and digitization — a Morocco aspiring to be a bridge between Africa and Europe in the 21st century.
And so our journey through thirty chapters ends — from the first humans at Jebel Irhoud to the Al Boraq train. But before we close the book, let us gather the lessons: the Conclusion.
Dates to remember:
2020–2025 CE: the great drought years | seawater desalination — Casablanca (Africa’s largest) | advanced regionalization (2011 constitution) | 2030 CE: World Cup in Morocco | Morocco–Nigeria gas pipeline; green hydrogen
