«History of Morocco» series — Chapter 27 of 30

21st-Century Morocco: Economy & Infrastructure

In the last quarter-century, Morocco has become a vast construction site: giant ports, high-speed rail, industrial cities, renewable energy — infrastructure that made it Africa’s leader in several fields.

Tanger Med: Africa’s largest port

Tanger Med port was inaugurated in 2007 CE (Tanger Med 2 in 2019 CE), becoming Africa’s and the Mediterranean’s largest port with capacity exceeding 9 million containers a year — a logistics platform linking Europe to Africa.

Al Boraq: Africa’s fastest train

On 15 November 2018 CE Al Boraq was inaugurated — Africa’s first high-speed train (Tangier–Casablanca, 320 km/h) — cutting the journey from about 5 hours to 2 hours 10 minutes.

Automotive and aerospace industries

Morocco became Africa’s top car manufacturer (Renault in Tangier, Stellantis in Kenitra — output exceeding 700,000 vehicles a year), an aerospace hub (140+ companies), and a center for electric-battery manufacturing.

Noor: among the world’s largest solar plants

At Ouarzazate, the Noor solar complex was built — among the world’s largest solar plants — as part of the goal of 52% of electricity from renewables. Morocco aims to become a green-hydrogen exporter to Europe.

But the economy is not only numbers: culture is Morocco’s soul — from Tamazight, now an official language, to a cuisine that conquered the world. The story of Moroccan culture, in the next chapter.
