«History of Morocco» series — Chapter 1 of 30

Prehistoric Morocco: Home of the First Homo Sapiens

Before kings and dynasties, before Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, there was Morocco — and its land was the stage for the earliest chapters of the human story itself. Scientists now know that the oldest securely dated remains of Homo sapiens ever found were not in East Africa, as long believed, but in western Morocco.

Jebel Irhoud: 300,000 years

At Jebel Irhoud in western Morocco, a skull found in 1961 was first thought to be Neanderthal. The mystery lingered until an international team led by French paleoanthropologist Jean-Jacques Hublin (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig) and Dr. Abdelouahed Ben-Ncer (INSAP, Rabat) returned to excavate the site in 2004. The result was stunning: the remains of five individuals — three adults, a teenager and a child — with stone tools and animal bones, dated to about 300,000 years ago (between 280,000 and 350,000).

Published in Nature on 8 June 2017, the findings rewrote the story of humankind: these early people had modern-looking faces (thinner brow ridges, flatter profiles) but still-elongated braincases — humanity evolved in mosaic, not all at once. Before this discovery, the oldest known Homo sapiens came from Omo Kibish in Ethiopia (195,000 years). Our species’ history had just been pushed back a hundred thousand years — from Morocco.

The Aterian: the first composite tools

Between about 145,000 and 20,000 years ago, the makers of the Aterian culture lived in Morocco and North Africa — its earliest site is Ifri n’Ammar in Morocco. The Aterian is distinguished by tanged tools: points designed, for the first time in history, to be hafted onto wooden or bone handles — the earliest clear evidence of composite tools. At Taforalt (Grotte des Pigeons), pierced and ochre-stained Nassarius shell beads dated to 82,000 years were found — among the world’s oldest jewelry, proof that these humans symbolized, adorned themselves, and thought symbolically.

The Iberomaurusian: the world’s oldest cemetery

From about 20,000 to 10,000 years ago, the Iberomaurusian culture flourished across the Maghreb, with its most famous site at Taforalt (Grotte des Pigeons) near Berkane. There lies the oldest known cemetery of humanity, the oldest skull showing a successful trepanation in history, and a people who practiced ritual dental avulsion (the ceremonial removal of front teeth).

A 2024 study in Nature Ecology & Evolution analyzed element isotopes in the teeth and bones of individuals buried between 15,077 and 13,892 years ago, revealing a surprise: these “hunter-gatherers” were more gatherer than hunter — heavily reliant on wild plants and land snails, millennia before farming. Agriculture only reached Morocco about 7,600 years ago, its crops brought from distant lands — not invented here, but received by an ancient human soil.

The Capsian and the rock engravings

Next came the Capsian culture (about 10,000 to 6,000 years ago), centered more in the eastern Maghreb, then the Neolithic, which left stunning rock engravings in the High Atlas (Yagour and Oukaïmeden): elephants, cattle and weapons carved into stone — a visual memory of a world greener and wetter than today’s.

So, before the first city was built and the first letter written on this land, Morocco had been home to Homo sapiens for 300,000 years, a workshop of the earliest composite tools, the cemetery of the earliest honored dead, and the gallery of the earliest jewelry. Next chapter: Phoenician ships reach the coasts, and the story of Lixus and Mogador begins.
