Momo the Helpful Whale

Momo was a whale, and he was BIG. Bigger than Toto the turtle. Bigger than the old shipwreck. Bigger than ALL the corals in the Rainbow Reef put together.

Momo was so big that his voice was deep and rumbly. When he laughed, the whole reef went vroom-vroom-vroom! “Being big is fun,” Momo liked to say.

One wild night, a storm came to the Rainbow Reef. The waves went whoosh-whoosh-WHOOSH! The water spun round and round, and big pieces of driftwood tumbled down from the sea above.

Momo swam to the deep water and waited. He was so big and so strong that the storm could not move him.

In the morning, the sea was calm again. But oh no! What a mess!

Long brown logs of driftwood lay all over the reef. One big log lay right across Lulu the dolphin’s doorway. She could not swim out of her coral home!

Another log blocked Toto the turtle’s doorway. Another blocked Zizo the octopus’s doorway. And a HUGE log sat in front of Koko the crab’s tiny door. Koko was stuck inside, click-click-clicking his claws!

“Help!” cried Lulu. “I’m stuck!” “Help!” cried Toto, calmly. “Quite stuck, indeed.” “Help,” whispered Zizo, shyly. “Please?” “HELP!” shouted Koko, very loudly. “Click-click-HEEEELP!”

Lulu pushed the log with her shiny nose. It did not move. Toto pushed it with his strong old legs. It did not move. Zizo pushed it with all EIGHT of his arms. It did not move. Koko pushed it with his tiny claws. Click-click. It did not move.

The logs were far too heavy for the small friends.

Then they heard a deep, rumbly voice: “VVVRRROOOM! Don’t worry, friends. Here I come!”

It was Momo!

Momo swam up to Lulu’s doorway. He lowered his great big nose… and PUSHED! The log floated away. Lulu’s door was open! “Thank you, Momo!” she cried, doing a happy flip.

One by one, Momo helped them all. He pushed Toto’s log — swoosh! He pushed Zizo’s log — swish! And the HUGE log in front of Koko’s door? Momo pushed and pushed and pushed — and it floated away too! Koko popped out and danced a happy sideways dance.

Every home was open again.

The four friends looked at Momo, the reef’s gentle giant. “Being big is the best!” said Koko. “Momo saved the day!” “You helped every single one of us,” said Toto, smiling.

Momo’s deep voice rumbled with laughter. VVVRRROOOM! The whole reef giggled. “Being big IS fun,” said Momo. “But helping my friends is even better.”

And from that day on, whenever anyone in the Rainbow Reef needed help, Momo was there first — big, strong, and kind. Being big means helping the small.

The lesson: Helping others means using what you have to make someone’s day easier.
Talk about it: How can you help a friend or family member this week?
