Fadi and the Sandstorm

Fadi was a fennec fox, and his ears were ENORMOUS. They were so big he could hear a beetle sneeze three dunes away. “My ears are my superpower,” Fadi liked to say.

Fadi’s best friend was Riko, a tiny jerboa with springy legs that went boing-boing-boing across the sand.

Every morning, Fadi and Riko raced to the oasis. Every afternoon, they shared sweet dates under the palm trees. Every evening, Fadi would say, “See you tomorrow, Riko.” And Riko would say, “Boing-boing! Tomorrow!”

One hot afternoon, the sky turned the color of soup. The wind began to howl: whoooooosh! “A sandstorm!” cried the old tortoise. “Everyone to shelter!”

Fadi ran as fast as his little fox legs could carry him. He dove into the burrow just as the sand began to sting.

Safe. Dark. Quiet.

But wait — where was Riko?

Fadi listened with his enormous ears. Far away, under the howling wind, he heard a tiny voice: “Fadi! Heeelp!”

Riko was still out there, behind the big dune!

Fadi’s heart went thump-thump-thump. The storm was scary. The sand was scratchy. Going back out was dangerous.

But Fadi remembered what his mama always said: “A loyal friend never leaves a friend behind.”

So Fadi took a deep breath… and ran back into the storm.

Whoosh! The wind pushed him. Swish! The sand swirled. But Fadi followed his ears — boing, boing — until he found Riko, shivering behind the big dune.

Fadi wrapped his big, fluffy tail all around Riko like a warm blanket. “Hold on tight!” he shouted. And together — hop, run, boing-boing! — they made it back to the burrow.

Inside, Riko sneezed out a puff of sand. “Why did you come back for me?” he asked. “It was dangerous!”

Fadi smiled and flicked his enormous ears. “Because that’s what friends do,” he said. “We never leave each other behind.”

And from that day on, whenever the wind howled whoooooosh, all the animals knew: if you are lost in a storm, listen for Fadi’s ears. A loyal friend is always listening.

The lesson: Loyalty means never leaving a friend behind — even when it’s scary.
Talk about it: Who is a friend you would never leave behind?
