Rayan’s Brave Roar

Rayan was a lion cub with a big problem: his roar was tiny. “Meep!” went Rayan, trying his hardest. The big cubs laughed. “That’s not a roar, that’s a squeak!”

So Rayan practiced alone behind the dunes, hoping his roar would grow.

One afternoon, Rayan saw something that made his paws shake. Two big cubs had cornered little Riko the jerboa. They’d taken his dates. “Give them back!” squeaked Riko. “Boing — I mean, please!” “Make us, spring-legs,” laughed the big cubs.

Rayan’s heart went thump-thump-thump. The big cubs were bigger than him. His roar was tiny. Speaking up was scary.

But then Rayan remembered what his papa always said: “A wrong thing stays wrong until someone says so.”

Rayan stepped forward. His legs trembled. He opened his mouth and roared with all his might:

“STOP! That’s NOT fair!”

It wasn’t the biggest roar. But it was the truest roar — and truth is loud.

The big cubs stopped laughing. The old tortoise nodded slowly. Fadi stepped up beside Rayan. Then Ella. Then Nour. Then Pico.

“Yeah!” squeaked Riko, feeling brave too. “Not fair!”

The big cubs looked at all the friends standing together. Their ears drooped. “…Sorry, Riko,” they mumbled, and gave the dates back.

That night, Rayan practiced his roar behind the dunes again. “MEeP!” he went — and smiled. It was still small. But now he knew: the bravest roar isn’t the loudest one. It’s the honest one.

The lesson: Speaking the truth takes courage — and the bravest roar is an honest one.
Talk about it: When is it hard to speak up? What helps you be brave?
