Ella was the littlest elephant at the oasis. She couldn’t reach the high dates. Her trumpet was more of a toot. “I’m too small to help anyone,” Ella sighed.
Then came the hot season. The sun baked the sand. The pond shrank to a puddle. The old tortoise looked at the muddy puddle and shook his head. “I need water from the far spring,” he said, “but my legs are too old and slow.”
Fadi tried to carry water in a leaf — it spilled. Pico tried in his beak — too tiny. Nour tried in a shell — it leaked.
Ella looked at her little trunk. It wasn’t big. But it was… just her size.
She walked to the far spring — step, step, step — filled her trunk with cool water, and walked all the way back. She poured it into the hollow log by the pond.
Then she went again. And again. And again. Step, step, fill. Step, step, pour.
The other animals watched. Then Fadi started fanning her with a palm leaf. Pico cheered, “Ella! Ella!” Nour brought her clover for energy.
By sunset, the hollow log was full of clear, cool water. Every animal drank — even the old tortoise, who smiled his slowest, happiest smile.
“You have the biggest heart at the oasis,” he told Ella.
Ella lifted her little trunk high and tooted her toot — and this time, it sounded like a trumpet.
The lesson: You are never too small to help — helping others is what makes you big.
Talk about it: What is something small you can do to help someone today?
