«History of Morocco» series — Chapter 25 of 30
Mohammed VI: A New Morocco
Mohammed VI took the throne on 30 July 1999 CE (Throne Day) after his father’s death, launching what was called the “New Era“: reconciliation with the Years of Lead through the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (2004–2005 CE), and sweeping social reforms.
The 2004 Family Code
In February 2004 CE the new Family Code (Moudawana) was adopted: marriage age raised to 18, polygamy restricted by strict judicial conditions, women granted the right to seek divorce — a legal revolution in the Arab world, praised globally.
The National Initiative for Human Development, 2005 CE
On 18 May 2005 CE the King launched the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH): a royal program against poverty and marginalization in urban neighborhoods and villages — schools, clinics, roads, income-generating projects, with a massive budget over decades.
The 2011 constitution and the Arab Spring
When the Arab Spring winds blew (2011 CE) and the February 20 Movement took to the streets, the King chose reform over repression: a new constitution was approved on 1 July 2011 CE (popular referendum), expanding parliament’s and the government’s powers and enshrining Tamazight as an official language — the first Moroccan constitution to recognize Amazigh identity. In 2017 CE Morocco returned to the African Union after 33 years of absence (since 1984 CE). Today Morocco leads giant continental projects: the Morocco–Nigeria gas pipeline, the Dakhla Atlantic port, and the Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic initiative. And before all that, the American recognition of the Moroccan Sahara (2020 CE) had changed the rules of the game — its story is the next chapter.
