Chapter 16 — Selling Stock Photos & Video

1. What It Is

Every day, designers, bloggers, advertisers, and news sites buy millions of images and short video clips to use in their work. Stock platforms — Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, Getty Images/iStock, and others — are the marketplaces where they shop, and you can be the seller. You upload your photos and footage; when a customer downloads one, you get a royalty.

This is not about being an artist. It is about being a visual problem-solver. A buyer isn’t looking for the most beautiful sunset ever photographed — they’re looking for “a realistic photo of a mechanic changing a tire at night” or “a 10-second clip of someone pouring coffee in a home office.” Commercial usefulness decides what sells: business meetings, healthcare, families, construction, cooking, technology, finance, authentic everyday life. Artistic photos without a commercial purpose usually sit unsold.

One important note: this is a volume business. A single great photo earns almost nothing. A searchable portfolio of hundreds or thousands of useful images earns consistently. And video clips pay far more per download than still photos — roughly 5 to 50 times more in many cases.

2. Startup Cost

$0–$50 realistically. You already own the camera — the phone in your pocket. Stock agencies accept phone photos now, provided they’re sharp and well-lit. Natural light costs nothing; that’s 80% of the quality equation. If you want to spend anything, spend it on clean white backgrounds (a $10 poster board) or basic editing software, most of which is free. The platforms themselves cost nothing to join. Do not buy expensive camera gear “for stock” — earn your first hundred dollars with your phone first, then decide.

3. Skills Needed

  • Basic photography. Sharp focus, good exposure, level horizons. Free tutorials and a month of practice get you there.
  • Keywording (the real skill). Buyers find your work through search terms. A photo needs 25–50 accurate keywords in English (“chef,” “kitchen,” “chopping vegetables,” “restaurant kitchen night”). Bad keywords mean invisible photos — this is where most beginners fail.
  • Editing basics. Crop, straighten, remove dust spots, fix white balance. Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed (both free) are enough.
  • Model releases. If a person’s face is recognizable, the platform requires a signed release form. Free release apps exist; learn the habit early.
  • Commercial thinking. Before you shoot, ask: “Who would pay for this image, and what words would they search for?”

4. Time to First Dollar

Plan on 2–4 months to your first payout. Each platform has a review process: you submit a small batch of images (Shutterstock, for example, asks for 10 to start, and only one needs to pass), and approval takes a few days to a couple of weeks. Then your first sales arrive — but payouts only land once you cross a minimum threshold ($25 on Adobe Stock, $35 on Shutterstock), which can take a while for a small portfolio. Your first sale may come within weeks; your first withdrawable money takes longer.

5. Honest Monthly Range

Let’s do the math honestly, because this is where hype dies. A typical microstock photo download pays you roughly $0.25 to $1.00 (lower on subscription plans, higher on single-image sales). An average single stock photo in an active portfolio earns roughly $0.05 to $0.20 per month. So 100 great photos might earn $5–$20 a month — coffee money. A portfolio of 1,000 quality images can realistically generate $100–$300 a month on Adobe Stock and $150–$400 on Shutterstock, depending on niche and quality. To reach $1,000 a month you typically need 5,000–10,000 well-keyworded assets, or a strong video collection — a single 4K clip can pay $15–$40 per sale.

So: a beginner with a few hundred phone photos typically earns $10–$50/month in year one. Consistent uploaders with 1,000+ images over a year or two commonly see $100–$400/month. Full-time stock producers with huge video libraries can reach four figures — but that’s a job, not a side hobby. Varies widely by niche, quality, and how aggressively you keyword. One warning from real contributor experience: some platforms reset royalty tiers annually, and AI-generated content is flooding parts of the market, pushing prices down — so treat this as a slow-compounding side income, not a growth stock.

6. Who It’s For

  • People who already take photos for fun and would shoot anyway.
  • People with access to photogenic, commercial subject matter: tradespeople (plumbing, electrical, carpentry shoots sell well), cooks, parents of photogenic kids (with releases), healthcare workers, anyone with a visually interesting daily life.
  • People patient enough to upload hundreds of files before expecting results.
  • Immigrants have a genuine edge: authentic images of Arab-American daily life, halal food preparation, bilingual workplaces, and immigrant-family moments are undersupplied niches.

It is NOT for perfectionists who spend a day editing one photo, anyone who can’t tolerate rejection (platforms reject plenty), or people who need money this month.

7. Your First 3 Steps

  1. Open accounts and study the market. Create free contributor accounts on Adobe Stock and Shutterstock. Before uploading anything, search both platforms for subjects you can shoot — look at what’s selling, read the top keywords on popular images, and notice gaps. Your camera roll probably already contains 20 usable photos.
  2. Upload your first 50, keyworded properly. Edit them on your phone (straight, sharp, clean), then give each one 25–50 honest English keywords plus a clear title. Keywording is tedious and it is half the work — do it well or don’t bother. Submit in small batches and learn from rejections.
  3. Build a shooting habit around demand. Each week, shoot one small themed set (10–20 images): “breakfast table from above,” “car mechanic at work,” “child doing homework.” Upload, keyword, repeat. Revisit after 90 days: double down on whatever categories are actually selling, and stop shooting what isn’t.

Final honesty check: stock is honest money for honest work — pennies per download, multiplied by hundreds of files, over years. If you love photographing your daily life anyway, those pennies compound. If you’re doing it only for the money, you’ll quit at photo number 40.
