I have run a real blog for years — hundreds of posts, organized book sections, affiliate links, the whole thing. So let me tell you what nobody in the “start a blog and get rich” videos will say: blogging is slow, boring, and completely real. It is one of the few online roads where ordinary people with no special connections still win, because the winning formula has not changed in twenty years — a tight topic, published consistently, for a long time.
1. What It Is
A blog is a website where you publish articles on a regular schedule. A niche website is the sharper version of the same idea: instead of writing about everything, you write about one specific topic for one specific audience. “Taxes for rideshare drivers” is a niche. “Money news” is a graveyard.
Here is how people actually earn from a blog, in the order the money usually arrives:
- Affiliate commissions. You recommend a product you genuinely use — web hosting, a book, a piece of software — the reader clicks your link and buys, and you get a cut. This is almost always the first income stream, because it needs only a handful of readers who trust you.
- Display ads. Networks like Google AdSense (easy to join, low pay) or better-paying ones like Mediavine and its smaller-tier program Journey place ads on your pages and pay per thousand views. This needs real traffic first — no traffic, no ad money, no exceptions.
- Your own products. An e-book, a course, templates, your consulting services. Highest margin, hardest to build, and usually the stream that eventually pays the most.
The engine underneath all three is search traffic. Google sends you free visitors when your articles answer real questions better than anyone else. And here is the magic nobody markets: traffic compounds. An article you wrote in 2024 can still bring readers — and commissions — in 2027. But nothing compounds if you quit in month three. That is why niche + consistency beats everything. A narrow topic makes you the obvious answer for specific searches (“how do I file taxes as a DoorDash driver in Texas?”), and publishing every single week for two years is what separates blogs that earn from blogs that are digital diaries. Talent matters far less than staying power.
One more honest note from inside the work: readers return for reliability, not genius. They remember the site that answered their question at 11 PM, not the site with the cleverest headline.
2. Startup Cost
- $0 to start. A free WordPress.com plan, Blogger, or Substack costs nothing and is perfectly fine for testing whether you actually enjoy publishing every week. If you hate it, you have lost nothing.
- Roughly $30–$150 per year for a serious start. A domain name runs about $10–$15 a year; basic shared hosting runs about $3–$10 a month. That is the entire technology budget for most niche blogs.
The real cost is time, and you should budget it honestly: a quality article takes most people 4–8 hours to research, write, and polish. At one or two articles a week, you are investing a part-time job’s worth of hours for months before the money shows up. Anyone who prices only the hosting is lying to you about the cost.
3. Skills Needed
- Clear writing in your readers’ language. English, Arabic, French — whatever your audience reads. There is genuine, under-served demand for quality Arabic content online; that is a real opening, not a slogan.
- Basic SEO. You do not need to be an expert. You need to understand what people type into search, put the answer in your title and first paragraphs, and organize the article so a tired person finds the answer fast.
- Basic website tech. Installing WordPress, choosing a theme, adding a plugin, connecting an analytics tool. A weekend of tutorials covers it; you will learn the rest as you break things.
- Patience. This is the skill most bloggers lack, and it is the one that matters most. Everything else is learnable in weeks. This one takes years.
4. Time to First Dollar
Be honest with yourself here. A first affiliate commission can arrive within 1–3 months if a few articles start ranking and a reader buys through your link. But meaningful income — money that arrives every month and means something — typically takes 6–12 months of consistent publishing. The better-paying ad networks generally want to see around 10,000 monthly sessions before they accept you, which most blogs reach only after a year or more of steady work. If anyone tells you a new blog pays real money in 30 days, they are selling you a course, and the course is the product.
5. Honest Monthly Range
Every number here is hedged, because the spread between blogs is enormous and depends on niche, traffic, and time invested:
- Year one, with consistent effort: typically $0–$100 per month. Many consistent bloggers earn nothing in year one. That is normal, not failure.
- After two to three years of steady publishing: a realistic range for a working niche blog is roughly $200–$2,000 per month — varies widely by niche (finance and software pay better than poetry) and by how much traffic you built.
- Outliers earn far more — five figures a month is real for a small number of established sites. But most blogs earn little and get abandoned around month four. The difference is almost never talent. It is time on task.
6. Who It’s For
- People who enjoy explaining things and have a topic they can write about for years without getting bored. Ask yourself: could I write 100 articles about this? If the answer is no, pick something else.
- People with real-world experience worth sharing — the accountant who writes about small-business taxes, the mechanic who writes about buying used cars, the immigrant who documents navigating American systems in Arabic.
- Not for anyone who needs money this month. If rent is due, read the freelancing chapters first, earn there, and build the blog on the side. Blogs are a slow road; treat them like one.
7. Your First 3 Steps
- Pick one narrow niche you could write 50 articles about. “Budget travel in Morocco” beats “travel.” “Halal investing for beginners” beats “finance.” Check that you actually care about it — you will live inside this topic for two years.
- Publish one to two articles per week for six months before judging anything. Install analytics, then barely look at them until month three. The schedule is the strategy. Most of your articles will get under 100 views; a few winners will eventually carry the site. That is how it works for everyone.
- Add ONE income stream around month three or four. Join one affiliate program for a product you genuinely use, and recommend it naturally inside articles where it fits. Add display ads only once your traffic justifies it. One stream done honestly beats five streams done desperately.
