KDP — Chapter 8 — Self-Publishing on Amazon KDP

1. What it is

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is Amazon’s free platform for publishing your own books. You upload an ebook — and optionally a paperback, which Amazon prints one copy at a time only when ordered, so there is no print run and no inventory. Your book sells on amazon.com, next to every other book in the world.

The money: ebooks priced between $2.99 and $9.99 earn a 70% royalty (a $9.99 book pays you roughly $7 per sale). Paperbacks earn 60% of the list price minus the printing cost — for example, a $19.99 paperback that costs about $5 to print nets you roughly $7.

I know this process from the inside, because I did it myself. In October 2026 I published my own book, The Complete Tax Book: I wrote the manuscript, designed the cover, and built the EPUB file myself. I priced the ebook at $9.99 (70% royalty) and the paperback at $19.99 using Amazon’s free ISBN. After I hit publish, the book went into “In review” status — Amazon checks every book, and approval takes up to 72 hours. Mine was approved, and the book is now live on Amazon (search “The Complete Tax Book” or find it at amazon.com/dp/B0HMQ255DP) — with zero printing costs paid upfront.

That is the honest picture: publishing is free and real. Selling is the hard part — more on that below.

2. Startup cost

$0 to publish — KDP itself charges nothing, and Amazon offers a free ISBN. One note: with the free ISBN, Amazon is listed as the publisher of record; your own ISBN (about $125 in the US, through Bowker) lists you. Cover design: $0 if you design it yourself, $50–$200 to hire a designer. Optional: order a printed proof copy (about $10) to hold the paperback in your hands before strangers do. I built my manuscript, cover, and EPUB with free tools and paid nothing to publish.

3. Skills needed

  • Real expertise in your topic. A book is a long promise; readers can tell within ten pages whether you know your subject.
  • Writing stamina. A real book is 150–300 pages. Most people underestimate the work by a factor of three.
  • Basic formatting. A clean Word or Google Doc converted to EPUB — Amazon’s free Kindle Create tool does this well.
  • A cover that reads at thumbnail size. Most shoppers never see your cover bigger than a postage stamp. If the title isn’t readable tiny, the cover failed.
  • Choosing the right 7 keywords and 2 categories so Amazon shows your book to the right readers. This is quiet, unglamorous, and it matters.

4. Time to first dollar

The book itself takes 2–6 months to write for most first-time authors — that is the real timeline, and it comes before any dollar. After you hit publish: review takes up to 72 hours; first sales can come within days if you have an audience waiting — but honestly, most new authors wait weeks or months for meaningful sales, and Amazon pays royalties about 60 days after the end of the month earned. Budget for a long runway, not a quick win.

5. Honest monthly range

Here is what the hype videos won’t tell you: most self-published books sell a handful of copies — to friends and family — and earn under $50 a month. That is the normal outcome. The KDP marketplace is enormously crowded, with millions of titles competing for the same readers, and most of them sell almost nothing.

  • Authors with 3–5 books in a real niche: typically $200–$2,000 per month, built over years.
  • Authors who make a living from KDP exist, but they are a small minority — usually with 10+ books, years in the game, and an audience they built somewhere else.

Varies widely. My own lesson from publishing The Complete Tax Book: the upload button takes five minutes; the book took months; and what will decide whether it sells is not the KDP dashboard — it’s the audience I built on my blogs and channels before the book ever existed. Owning your audience (a blog, an email list, a channel) matters more than the upload button. A book multiplies an audience; it almost never creates one from nothing.

6. Who it’s for

People with genuine expertise and the patience to build an audience around it. If you already write, teach, or advise — taxes, cooking, parenting, your profession — a book turns that knowledge into an asset that sells while you sleep. If you have no topic and no audience yet, write the blog first and the book second. The book is the harvest, not the seed.

7. Your first 3 steps

  1. Build the audience before the book. Start the blog or newsletter now — one useful article a week in your topic. These readers become your day-one buyers and reviewers, and reviews are what make Amazon’s algorithm notice a new book.
  2. Write the manuscript to solve one problem for one reader. Use a clean Word or Google Doc, one consistent style, no fancy formatting — formatting comes later. Finish the draft before you touch covers or KDP.
  3. Format → cover → EPUB (Kindle Create is free) → open your KDP account → upload → wait out the “In review” period (up to 72 hours) → order your own proof copy before you promote a single link. Then tell your audience.

The unsexy truth of this whole chapter: the publishing part is free, fast, and easy. The writing is slow. The audience is everything. Anyone who tells you KDP is passive income skipped all three.
