A Scene from Real Life
Picture a scene repeated in millions of American homes every spring: a rainy Saturday in March, and you’re sitting at the kitchen table in front of a cardboard box full of papers — receipts, W-2 forms, a 1099 that arrived two weeks ago and you can’t remember where you put. You flip through tax forms that might as well be written in a foreign language, and you wonder: “Will I get a refund this year? Or will I owe?” Then you hear your neighbor got a big refund, and your anxiety spikes. Taxes feel like the weather: something that happens to you, something you neither understand nor control.
This book exists to change that relationship.
Taxes are not weather. Taxes are a system — a human-made system, with written rules that can be learned, logic that can be understood, and decisions that you can make before they’re made for you. This book will move you from someone taxes happen to, to someone who understands and plans for them.
Why Did Jamal Amimi Write This Book?
My name is Jamal Amimi, and I have worked in taxes and accounting for many years. In that time I have seen hundreds of people — employees, freelancers, new immigrants, retirees — lose money not because the law was unfair to them, but because they didn’t know the rules. I have seen an employee pay more tax than he owed because he didn’t know he qualified for a certain deduction. I have seen a freelancer blindsided by a huge April tax bill because he didn’t know he was supposed to make quarterly estimated payments. I have seen families fail to claim tax credits they were entitled to, simply because nobody told them those credits existed.
The U.S. tax code is complicated, yes. But most of what an ordinary person needs is not complicated. What people need is a clear explanation, with real examples and correct numbers, in language they understand. That is exactly what this book delivers.
Who Is This Book For?
This book is written for the ordinary taxpayer: the salaried employee, the freelancer, the married couple filing jointly, the new immigrant filing a first return, the retiree wondering about taxes on a pension, the young person starting a first job. You need no background in accounting or economics. All you need is the desire to understand.
The book is bilingual — Arabic and English — because tax knowledge should reach everyone, including members of the Arab-American community who may struggle with tax terminology in English alone.
How to Use This Book
You have two options:
Option one: read it straight through. The chapters build on each other: you’ll start by understanding how taxes work, then income types, then deductions, then credits, then specialized topics. If you’re a complete beginner, this is the best path.
Option two: jump straight to what matters to you. Each chapter stands on its own as much as possible. Are you self-employed? Start with the self-employment chapter. Have kids? Start with the family credits chapter. Approaching retirement? Start with the retirement taxes chapter. Don’t feel guilty about skipping chapters — the book is designed for that.
Practical tip: keep a pen and paper beside you while reading, or open a notes file on your phone. Whenever you find an idea that applies to your situation — a deduction you might qualify for, a mistake you might have made, a question to ask your accountant — write it down immediately. This book is not a novel to be read and forgotten; it is a working tool.
The “Verify Figures at Filing” Habit
Pay attention to this golden rule, and I’ll repeat it in every chapter: tax numbers change every year.
The Internal Revenue Service adjusts most limits and amounts annually for inflation. The standard deduction, tax bracket thresholds, credit amounts — they all move. Congress also changes the laws: the “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act signed in July 2025, for example, changed dozens of rules at once — raising the Child Tax Credit to $2,200, adding new deductions for tips, overtime, auto-loan interest, and seniors.
So: the figures in this book are correct for tax year 2026 (returns filed in 2027), and I verified every one of them against IRS sources. But when it’s time to file your return, verify the numbers yourself — check IRS.gov, IRS Publication 17, or ask a qualified tax professional. The rules and concepts in this book endure; the specific numbers change. Make “verify at filing” a habit you never abandon.
⚠️ Important Disclaimer — Read This First
This book is general educational content, not personal tax advice.
Taxes depend heavily on your personal circumstances: your income, filing status, state, and details this book cannot know. An example that fits your neighbor may not fit you. A rule that applies this year may change next year. Therefore:
- Use this book to understand, ask smart questions, and make informed decisions — not as a substitute for professional advice.
- Consult a qualified tax professional (a CPA, an Enrolled Agent, or a tax attorney) before making major tax decisions.
- The author and publisher are not responsible for decisions you make based on this book alone.
This is not empty legal boilerplate — it is practical advice from someone who has seen what happens when people apply a general rule to a specific situation without consulting a professional.
What Will You Learn?
By the end of this book, you will understand:
- How taxes actually work — the complete journey from your gross pay to the final bill, step by step.
- Every type of income — what is taxed and what isn’t, from wages to tips to stock gains.
- Deductions — how to shrink your taxable income, and when to itemize versus take the standard deduction.
- Tax credits — the most powerful bill-reducers: the Child Tax Credit, the Earned Income Credit, and more.
- Freelancing and small business — self-employment tax, deductible expenses, estimated payments.
- Retirement — how pensions, Social Security, and retirement-account distributions are taxed.
- Avoiding common mistakes — the errors that cost people thousands every year, and how to dodge them.
Where Does Your Tax Money Go?
A fair question: if you’re paying thousands every year, you deserve to know where it goes. In short: federal income taxes fund the federal government — the military and defense, federal agencies, the courts, and interest on the national debt. Payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare), on the other hand, go directly to the retirement and health programs — including benefits you may one day receive yourself.
State taxes fund public schools, roads, and local police; property taxes fund the schools in your district directly. When you understand where the money goes, taxes stop feeling like “theft” and become what they actually are: your subscription to running the country — a subscription you have every right to manage smartly and keep at the legal minimum.
The Three Fears That Keep People from Understanding
In my years of practice, I’ve heard the same three fears hundreds of times. Let me face them head-on:
Fear one: “I’ll make a mistake and the IRS will come to my house.” The truth: the IRS doesn’t knock on doors over a small math error. Most mistakes are corrected by mail — “we found a difference of X; pay or explain.” A real audit is rare and usually targets very high incomes or wildly exaggerated deductions. If you’re honest and organized, you have nothing to fear.
Fear two: “Taxes are too complicated — I’ll never understand them.” The truth: the full code is complicated, but the 20% that matters to you is simple. Most people need to understand: their income types, the standard deduction, one or two credits, and how to fill out a W-4. This book covers that and more — in plain language.
Fear three: “My accountant handles everything, so why learn?” The truth: your accountant fills in the numbers you give them, but they don’t live your life. They don’t know you started a side business, made a large donation, or that your kid started college — unless you tell them. You are the source of information, and information that never reaches your accountant never becomes tax savings. Understanding taxes makes your accountant ten times more effective.
A Story from My Office
Years ago, a client came to me — a self-employed truck driver — holding his tax return, his face pale: he owed a huge amount he never expected. The problem? He wasn’t making quarterly estimated payments, and he kept no records of his truck expenses (fuel, maintenance, insurance) — expenses that would have cut his taxable income by thousands of dollars. The next year, we organized his records, he started paying quarterly estimates, and he claimed every legitimate expense. The difference was several thousand dollars — same income, same law, but knowing the rules changed everything. This story repeats in different forms every tax season, and it’s why this book exists.
The Book’s Roadmap: What’s in Each Chapter
- Chapter 1: How taxes work — the complete journey from paycheck to tax bill in five steps, with a fully worked example.
- Chapter 2: Every income type — what’s taxed and what’s exempt, from wages to tips to stock gains.
- Later chapters: Deductions (standard vs. itemized, and when itemizing pays), tax credits (the $2,200 Child Tax Credit, the Earned Income Credit, and more), freelancing and small business, retirement and Social Security taxes, year-round planning strategies, the common mistakes that cost people thousands, and how to deal with the IRS when something goes wrong.
How to Verify Any Number Yourself (A Practical Guide)
When I say “verify at filing,” here’s exactly how to do it in five minutes:
- IRS.gov — the only official source that matters. Every fall (usually October), the IRS publishes the annual Revenue Procedure with the new numbers for the coming year.
- Publication 17 — the IRS’s free, comprehensive guide for individuals, updated annually.
- The filing software you use — reputable programs update automatically with the correct figures each year.
- A qualified tax professional — for big decisions or complex situations, don’t skip this.
The formula: concepts from this book, exact numbers from the official source at filing time. With that combination you’ll never go wrong.
What Does It Mean to Be a “Smart Taxpayer”?
A smart taxpayer isn’t someone who knows every section of the code — it’s someone with three habits:
Habit one: organized records. One folder (paper or digital) per tax year: every W-2, 1099, and important receipt goes in the moment it arrives. In April, you search for nothing — everything is already there. This habit alone prevents 80% of tax-season problems.
Habit two: asking questions. Before any big financial decision — selling property, withdrawing from retirement, starting a business — ask: “What’s the tax impact?” An early question is cheap; a late surprise is expensive.
Habit three: year-round thinking. Taxes aren’t an April event — they’re a movie running all year. The December charitable gift, the July W-4 tweak, the September estimated payment — all scenes in the same film. Whoever plans in December pays less than whoever remembers in April.
The Five Costliest Mistakes I’ve Seen in My Career
Not filing out of fear of the bill. Some people don’t file because they know they’ll owe and can’t pay. The result: the failure-to-file penalty (5% per month up to 25%) + the failure-to-pay penalty + interest — and the IRS will eventually estimate your tax itself, usually higher than what you truly owe. Always file, even if you can’t pay — you can request a monthly payment plan.
Ignoring the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Millions are left on the table every year because eligible workers — modest earners and families — don’t know the credit exists or assume they don’t qualify. In 2026 it reaches $8,231 for a family with three or more children. If you earn modest wages, check your eligibility every year.
Skipping estimated payments. The freelancer who never pays quarterly gets blindsided in April by a giant bill + an underpayment penalty. The fix is simple: pay every three months.
Throwing away records and receipts. “I didn’t keep the donation receipt” = a donation with no deduction. “No mileage log” = a lost deduction. The paper you toss today is the dollars you lose tomorrow.
Choosing the wrong filing status. A couple files “separately” thinking it saves money, while “jointly” would have saved them thousands through wider brackets, a doubled standard deduction, and eligibility for credits denied to separate filers. Never guess your status — compute both or ask a professional.
How to Read This Book’s Chapters
Every chapter follows the same structure so you know what to expect:
- A real-life scene — a true-to-life story that puts you at the heart of the topic.
- The concept — explained in plain language, with no unexplained jargon.
- A worked example — real 2026 numbers showing the rule in action.
- Key takeaways — a quick summary for review before tax season.
If you’re busy, read just the scene and the takeaways — you’ll get 80% of the value in 20% of the time. And if you want mastery, work the example yourself on a calculator with your own numbers. Nothing cements a concept like computing it by hand.
Frequently Asked Questions Before We Begin
Q: Does this book replace an accountant? A: No — it makes you a better client for one. You’ll understand what they do, give them complete information, and review their work intelligently.
Q: My income is simple — do I need all this? A: Yes — arguably more than anyone. Modest earners are hurt most by tax ignorance (missed credits) and helped most by knowledge (the Earned Income Credit can mean thousands of dollars).
Q: Should I read the Arabic or the English version? A: The content is equivalent. Read whichever you’re comfortable with — but learn the key English terms too (AGI, W-2, credit…) because you’ll see them on the official forms.
Q: What if the law changes after this book is published? A: The concepts (brackets, deduction-vs.-credit, the five-step logic) stay valid for decades. Only the numbers change — which is exactly why the “verify at filing” habit exists.
Q: Where do I start if tax season is two weeks away? A: Start with Chapter 1 (how taxes work), then jump to the chapter matching your situation, and gather your documents tonight. Perfect is the enemy of good — start now.
Key Takeaways
- Taxes aren’t weather that happens to you — they’re a system you can learn and plan for.
- Your taxes fund defense, federal programs, schools, and roads — understanding them is your right.
- Don’t fear a small mistake (it’s fixed by mail), and don’t think an accountant replaces your own understanding — you’re the source of the information.
- Read the book in order or jump to what matters; each chapter works on its own too.
- Tax numbers change yearly: verify them at IRS.gov, in Publication 17, or with a professional before filing.
- This book is general education, not personal advice — consult a qualified tax professional before big decisions.
- Keep a notebook while reading and write down every idea that applies to your situation.
- The three habits of a smart taxpayer: organized records, asking about the tax impact before big decisions, and planning year-round — not just in April.
- Avoid the five killer mistakes: not filing, ignoring the Earned Income Credit, skipping estimated payments, tossing records, and picking the wrong filing status.
This chapter is for general education, not personal tax advice. Consult a qualified tax professional for your situation.
