Chapter 5: How Predators Hunt Children Through Screens

There is a hard truth every parent must know: the predators who target children no longer wait for them in a dark alley or at the school gate. They have moved to where children spend most of their time today — behind screens. The screen in your child’s hand, which you see as a tool for entertainment and learning, is the same door through which strangers enter their world.

This chapter is not meant to frighten you, but to arm you with knowledge. The predator depends on the ignorance of parents and children alike. The more you understand how he operates, and the more your child understands what to watch for, the smaller the space in which he can move.

Where Do Predators Find Children?

The predator goes where the children are, just as the hunter goes where the prey is. Today, the largest gathering of children in history is on the internet. But it is important to understand: the danger is not in any single app, but in the places of contact

In-game chat rooms. Millions of children play online multiplayer games, and most of these games include text or voice chat. A child talks to players he has never met, and the predator poses as a friendly player. The game itself is not the problem; the problem is that the chat gives strangers direct access to your child without you seeing it.

Direct messages. Nearly every social platform has a private messaging system. The predator usually starts with a public comment or an innocent message, then asks to move to a private conversation. The golden rule your child must know: any stranger who wants to talk to him “in private,” away from everyone else’s eyes, is by itself a red flag.

Livestreams and comment sections. Children watch livestreams and interact in the comments. The predator watches for who comments constantly, who seems young or lonely or hungry for attention, then reaches out. Public comments are the shop window from which the predator selects his victims.

Platforms where messages disappear. Some apps delete messages automatically after they are read. This feature was designed for privacy, but predators love it because it erases their tracks. If your child uses an auto-deleting app to talk to people you do not know, that is a problem worth discussing.

Note that we have not named specific apps, and that is deliberate. Apps change every year, and predators move wherever children go. What does not change is the pattern: a place where children meet strangers, a way to communicate pri

The Stages of Grooming: How the Predator Works, Step by Step

Child-protection specialists describe predators’ behavior as a recurring pattern called “grooming.” Understanding this pattern is the strongest weapon you own, because it turns what looks like an “innocent friendship” into a clear series of alarms. The stages usually go like this:

Stage one: catching attention and getting close. The predator picks a child who seems to need attention: a lonely child, a child going through family trouble, a child looking for friends in a new game. He starts with warmth: praising the child’s gaming skill, laughing at his jokes, showing exaggerated interest in his life. To a child who does not find this attention at home or at school, this person feels like “finally, someone who understands me.”

Stage two: building trust with gifts and secrets. After days or weeks, the predator starts offering things: points or weapons in the game, gift cards, phone credit top-ups, promises of prizes. At the same time he builds “shared secrets”: “this is just between us, don’t tell your parents.” The shared secret creates a false bond and plants the first seed of isolation: the child learns to hide something f

Stage three: gradually breaking boundaries. Here the predator starts testing limits: sexual jokes, personal questions about the body, a request for an “ordinary” photo followed by escalating requests. Each step looks small on its own, but each is designed to move the red line a little further, until what was unthinkable at the start becomes “normal” in the child’s eyes. This is the most dangerous stage of grooming, because the child himself may not realize he is being pushed toward the edge.

Stage four: isolating the child from the parents. Alongside all of this, the predator works on distorting the parents’ image in the child’s mind: “your parents don’t understand you,” “if you tell them they’ll get angry and take your phone.” The goal is clear: the predator becomes the child’s only reference point, and the child becomes afraid to ask for help from the very people who can actually help him.

Stage five: exploitation. Once the predator holds photos, information, or secrets, the mask changes: the threats begin. “If you don’t send more, I’ll send your photos to your parents and friends.” The child who was a victim becomes, in his own mind, a “guilty party” who fears scandal more than he fears the predator himself. And here the catastrophe falls: silence.

Understand this well: the predator does not start with threats; he starts with kindness. That is what makes him dangerous. Teach your child that sudden, exaggerated kindness from an online stranger is not ge

Sextortion: A Documented Crime and How to Face It

Among the documented crimes of recent years is what is known as online sextortion: a person — who may be a complete stranger or a fake account — obtains a private image of the child (sometimes by tricking the child into taking it himself), then threatens to publish it unless the child sends more or pays money. Some cases have ended in real tragedy because the child believed his life was over and there was no way out.

Your child must hear these facts from you, clearly and calmly:

First: If this happens to you, you are the victim, not the guilty one. The criminal is the one who threatened and blackmailed — not the child who was tricked. Being deceived is not the child’s crime.

Second: Never send anything more, and never pay. Giving in to the blackmailer does not stop the blackmail; it proves to him that the threat works, so he asks for more. The rule is simple: a threat is met by exposing it, not by submitting to it.

Third: Tell one of your parents immediately, or any adult you trust. Yes, it will be embarrassing and frightening. But parents who love you will help you, not destroy you. The blackmailer is bet

Fourth: Preserve the evidence. Do not delete the messages and threats; take screenshots and keep them. This evidence is what the police need to pursue the criminal.

Fifth: Cut off contact, block the account, and report it to the platform. Most platforms have mechanisms for reporting blackmail, and police in most countries treat these crimes seriously.

Also tell your child one important truth: the blackmailer usually threatens far more than he can actually do, and many of these threats collapse the moment an adult steps in. Fear magnifies the blackmailer in the child’s eyes; the reality is much smaller once grown-ups get involved.

Warning Signs a Parent Can Notice

Predators depend on secrecy, and secrecy leaves traces. Watch for these signs — no single one is conclusive proof, but several together deserve a serious pause and a calm conversation with your child:

  • Sudden secrecy around devices: a child who used to use his phone openly in front of you now hides the screen when you approach, closes apps quickly, or changes passwords and refuses to share them.
  • Gifts from “friends” you have never heard of: topped-up game credit, gift cards, electronic money, or even parcels arriving b
  • Sexual language beyond his age: words, jokes, or references that do not fit his age or what he learns at home. A child does not invent this language out of nothing; he usually heard it — or had it read to him — by someone older.
  • Behavioral change: withdrawal, anxiety, a sudden drop in school performance, nightmares, or unexplained fear of losing the phone.
  • A new “perfect” friend you know nothing about: your child talks excitedly about a friend he met in a game or on a platform, but he does not know the person’s real name, age, or where he lives — yet trusts him blindly.
  • Requests for secrecy: “don’t tell Mom and Dad” — any relationship that asks your child to hide it from you is a relationship you need to know about.

What matters: when you notice these signs, do not start with accusation and punishment. Start with questions and containment. A child who fears your reaction will hide more; a child who feels safe will talk more. Your first goal is to remain the person he turns to — not the person he runs from.

What Exactly Do We Teach Our Children?

General advice like “be careful online” is not enough. A child needs specific, clear rules, stated in language he understands and repeated until they become second nature. These are the essential rules:y mail — from people you have never heard of before.ting on your silence; breaking the silence is what defeats him.nerosity — it may be

No private chats with strangers. You may play with anyone in public games, but a private conversation with someone you do not know in real life is forbidden. A stranger who wants you alone in a private chat wants to hide something from everyone else.

No personal photos to anyone online. Not your photo, not your siblings’ photos, not photos of your home or school. A photo that leaves your phone never comes back; it can be copied and published in seconds.

No secrets from your parents. Anyone who asks you to hide something from your parents is putting you in danger, no matter how nice he seems. A shared secret with a stranger is not an adventure; it is a trap.

Tell us immediately, and you will not be punished for telling. This is the most important sentence in this chapter. Your child must know — through repeated words and through your actions at the first test — that telling you about something suspicious will never bring punishment or the loss of his phone. The predator plants in the child’s mind that “your p

It is never your fault. A child who falls into a grooming trap feels guilt and shame. Repeat to him: a professional deceiver can fool grown adults — how much easier a child? The guilt belongs to the criminal alone.

Do not accept gifts from online strangers. A free gift from someone you do not know is not generosity; it is bait. Teach your child to always ask: what does this person want from me in return for this gift?

Trust your feeling. If a conversation or a request makes you uncomfortable, that feeling is usually right. Stop, block, and tell us. You do not need “proof” to feel that something is wrong.

What To Do If It Happens

Despite all prevention, it may happen. What matters then is not regretting the past but acting correctly in the present. Your steps as a parent:

First: hold your child before you question him. The first thing he needs is to know that you are with him, not against him. Anger and shouting at this moment push him toward silence — and silence is the criminal’s only ally.

Second: preserve the evidence. Do not delete anything. Take screenshots of the conversations, the threats, the account names, the images sent. Record dates and times. This evidence is essential for any investigation.

Third: cut off contact. Block the offending accounts and report them inside the platform. Do not try to “trap” the criminal your

Fourth: contact the authorities. Reach out to your country’s police or your country’s child-protection hotline. Investigators know these crimes well and deal with them daily; you will not be the first to call, and you will not be met with surprise.

Fifth: seek psychological support for your child. Even if he seems “fine,” an experience of grooming or blackmail leaves a mark. A child psychologist helps him get past the guilt and fear. This is not a luxury; it is part of the treatment.

Sixth: review the safety settings. After the crisis, sit with your child and together reset the privacy settings on his accounts, review the friends list, and agree on new rules. Make him a partner in the solution, not a recipient of punishment.

What Does This Mean for Your Child?

It means the screen he carries is not only a window onto the world, but a window through which the world enters him — including those who want to harm him. It means that sudden kindness from a stranger is not always kindness, and that a secret he is asked to hide from you is not an alarm. And it means, above all, that you are there: that your door is always open, and that telling you anything — no matter how frightening or embarrassing — will bring him protection, not punishment.

The predator hunts in darkness: the darkness of ignorance and the darkness of silence. Your job as a parent is to keep the light on with knowledge and conversation, so that darkness finds no
