«History of Morocco» series — Chapter 9 of 30

The Almoravids: From the Desert to al-Andalus

In the mid-11th century CE, austere men of religion emerged from the heart of the Sahara carrying the banner of reform and jihad: the Almoravids (from al-murabitun — “those of the ribat,” the monastery-fortress). Within a few decades they built an empire stretching from the Senegal River to al-Andalus, and founded a city that would be Morocco’s capital for centuries: Marrakech.

The ribat: birth of a movement

Around 1039–1040 CE the jurist Abdallah ibn Yasin founded a ribat on an island in the Senegal River, preaching a rigorous Islam and strict moral reform to the Saharan Sanhaja tribes. He was joined by the Sanhaja chiefs Yahya ibn Umar (killed in 1055 or 1056 CE at the Battle of Tabfarilla) and his brother Abu Bakr ibn Umar. After Abdallah ibn Yasin was killed on 7 July 1058 CE (some sources 1059) fighting the Barghawata at Kurifala, Abu Bakr ibn Umar took command of the movement and pushed the conquests northward.

Founding Marrakech: correcting a common error

Abu Bakr ibn Umar founded the city of Marrakech in 1062 CE (per Ibn Abi Zar and Ibn Khaldun); some sources (Ibn Idhari) give 1070 CE — both dates stand in the sources. What must be corrected: the founder of Marrakech was Abu Bakr ibn Umar, NOT Yusuf ibn Tashfin, as is often wrongly repeated. The city remained a camp until the stone Qasr al-Hajar was built (May 1070), and Yusuf later raised the first brick mosque (1071). Abu Bakr returned to the Sahara to continue the jihad in the south, leaving his cousin Yusuf ibn Tashfin in command of the north — alongside his politically influential wife Zaynab an-Nafzawiyya. Yusuf would become the greatest of the Almoravid kings.

Zallaqa: crossing into al-Andalus

The Taifa kings of al-Andalus appealed to Yusuf against Alfonso VI of Castile; Yusuf crossed the strait and crushed him at the Battle of Zallaqa (Sagrajas) on 23 October 1086 CE. He then annexed the Taifa kings (1090–1091 CE), becoming master of both al-Andalus and Morocco. The Almoravid gold dinar became a trusted currency across the Mediterranean. Yusuf died on 2 September 1106 CE and was succeeded by his son Ali ibn Yusuf (1106–1143 CE). After his death (28 January 1143) his sons inherited a troubled realm — while a new revolution rose in the High Atlas: Ibn Tumart’s Almohad revolution. Marrakech fell to the Almohads in April 1147 CE, and the last Almoravid king Ishaq ibn Ali was killed. The Almoravid state ended (1040–1147 CE), but the Marrakech they founded remained Morocco’s capital for centuries. The Almohad story is the next chapter.
