History of Morocco Ch.21: The Rif War: Abd el-Krim

«History of Morocco» series — Chapter 21 of 30

The Rif War: Abd el-Krim

In July 1921 CE, Abd el-Krim al-Khattabi — the schoolteacher turned war leader — trapped and annihilated the Spanish army at Annual: between 8,000 and 13,000 Spanish soldiers were killed (the figure is disputed among historians), and the rest surrendered. It was Europe’s worst colonial defeat of the twentieth century, and on 19 September 1921 CE the Rif Republic was proclaimed.

France intervenes: a miniature world war

France and Spain agreed (Madrid conference, July 1925 CE) to crush the Republic: France massed 160,000 troops under Pétain (France’s greatest First World War commander), and a volunteer American squadron of 19 pilots joined the fight. On 8 September 1925 CE the Spanish executed the Alhucemas landing — the largest amphibious landing in military history until Normandy.

Fall and exile: 26 May 1926 CE

Abd el-Krim surrendered to the French on 26 May 1926 CE and was exiled to Réunion island. In June 1947 CE, while being transferred to France, his ship stopped at Port Said — he escaped to Egypt, which granted him political asylum, and he lived there until his death on 6 February 1963 CE. During the war the Spanish used chemical weapons against Rif civilians — a documented war crime; the high cancer rates in the Rif are attributed to them (the link is scientifically debated).

The Rif War taught the world a lesson: a small people armed with faith and organization can humiliate an empire. After Abd el-Krim’s fall, the battle moved to the cities: the nationalist movement and the young Sultan Mohammed V — the story of independence, in the next chapter.
